Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative (SSHS)

Safe Schools Healthy StudentsFunded by a collaboration of the U.S. Dept of Education, the U.S. Dept of Justice, and the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services, this unique program is designed to prevent violence and substance abuse among our Nation’s youth, schools and communities by developing and applying real-world knowledge about what works best to promote safe and healthy environments in which children can learn and develop. DC’s current SSHS initiative is a four-year project (July 2009 through June 2013), with a possibility of an additional No Cost Extension year. Washington Latin PCS is the Lead School/Grantee and has contracted with the Center to manage and conduct the project activities. In addition to Washington Latin, schools served under this project are Howard Road PCS (all campuses), Center City PCS-Congress Heights Campus, Eagle Academy PCS and Achievement Prep PCS.

Project staff works with these partnering schools and its community partners, including the DC Metropolitan Police Department, the DC Department of Mental Health and DC Court Social Services, to build systems and programs to address the five focus areas of the project:
